Military time with minutes
Minutes never change: only the hour converts. So 7:45 AM is 0745, 7:45 PM is 1945, and 12:05 AM (just after midnight) is 0005. Common shift times:
| Shift time | Military | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM | 0700 – 1900 | 12-hour day shift |
| 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM | 1900 – 0700 | 12-hour night shift |
| 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM | 0700 – 1500 | 8-hour day shift |
| 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM | 1500 – 2300 | Swing shift |
| 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM | 2300 – 0700 | Night (graveyard) shift |
| 8:00 AM – 8:00 AM | 0800 – 0800 | 24-hour firefighter shift |
How to convert military time
Standard to military
- AM times: write the hour with two digits and drop the colon — 6:15 AM = 0615. Exception: 12 AM (midnight) becomes 00 — 12:30 AM = 0030.
- PM times: add 12 to the hour — 6:15 PM = 1815. Exception: 12 PM (noon) stays 12 — 12:30 PM = 1230.
Military to standard
- 0000–0059: 12 AM hour (0045 = 12:45 AM).
- 0100–1159: same hour, AM (0930 = 9:30 AM).
- 1200–1259: 12 PM hour (1215 = 12:15 PM).
- 1300–2359: subtract 12, PM (2145 = 9:45 PM).
How to say military time
Military time is spoken as two numbers: 1530 is "fifteen thirty". Add "zero" for single-digit hours or minutes (0605 is "zero six zero five"), and say "hundred" on the hour (0800 is "zero eight hundred", 2000 is "twenty hundred"). Adding "hours" at the end is common in the military and public safety, but optional elsewhere.
Midnight: 0000 or 2400?
Both mean midnight. 0000 marks the start of a new day and is the standard way to write it. 2400 is sometimes used for the end of a day — for example a shift "0800–2400". There is no 2401: one minute after midnight is 0001.
Why shift workers use military time
On night shifts, "7:00" could mean the start or the end of a shift. Writing 0700 or 1900 removes the guesswork on handovers, medication times, incident reports and time cards. If you track hours across midnight, the time card calculator accepts both formats and handles overnight shifts. See how nurses and police officers schedule their shifts.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert military time to standard time?
For 0100 to 1259, the hours are the same — just add AM (or PM from 1200 to 1259). For 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 from the hours and add PM: 1830 − 1200 = 6:30 PM. 0000 to 0059 is the 12 o'clock hour after midnight: 0030 = 12:30 AM.
What does 1830 mean in military time?
1830 is 6:30 PM. Subtract 12 from 18 to get 6, keep the 30 minutes, and it is in the PM.
Is 2400 the same as 0000?
Both mean midnight. 0000 is the start of a day and is the usual way to write midnight; 2400 is sometimes used to mean the end of a day, for example a shift that runs "0800 to 2400".
What professions use military time?
The armed forces, hospitals and nursing, police, fire and EMS, 911 dispatch, aviation, public transit and many factories and logistics operations use 24-hour time to avoid AM/PM mistakes, especially across night shifts.
Is military time used in Europe?
Most of Europe and much of the world use the 24-hour clock in everyday life, but usually written with a colon (18:30) rather than as military time (1830) and without saying "hours".
How do you say military time?
Say the hours and minutes as two numbers, adding "zero" before single digits: 0630 is "zero six thirty". On the hour, say "hundred": 1800 is "eighteen hundred hours".
What is 1300 in military time?
1300 is 1:00 PM. Any military time from 1300 to 2359 is in the afternoon or evening: subtract 12 for the standard hour.
