What is a rotating shift schedule?
On a rotating schedule, you don't work the same hours every week. Instead, you follow a repeating cycle — for example a week of days, a week of evenings and a week of nights, or blocks of 12-hour days and nights. Rotations let a business run around the clock while sharing nights, weekends and holidays fairly across the team.
Common shift hours
| Shift | 8-hour schedules | 12-hour schedules |
|---|---|---|
| Day shift (first shift) | 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM | 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM |
| Swing / evening shift (second shift) | 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM | — |
| Night / graveyard shift (third shift) | 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM | 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM |
Start times vary — 6:00, 6:30 and 8:00 AM are also common. 24-hour shifts (fire departments) usually run 7:00 or 8:00 AM to the same time next day.
Types of rotation
- Fast vs slow: fast rotations change shift every 2–3 days (continental); slow rotations stay on a shift for a week or more (southern swing).
- Forward vs backward: forward goes day → evening → night, which most sleep researchers consider easier to adapt to.
- Rotating vs fixed: in some patterns teams rotate between days and nights (2-2-3 Panama, DuPont); in others the days off rotate but the shift is fixed (Pitman).
